Turks and Caicos Islands
The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory located southeast of The Bahamas in the Atlantic Ocean. They consist of two island groups with a total land area of approximately 948 square kilometres. The population is around 46,800, primarily concentrated on Providenciales and Grand Turk. The economy is based on tourism, offshore finance, and real estate, and the official currency is the US dollar.
Telecommunications infrastructure includes two submarine fibre optic cables and an Intelsat satellite earth station. Services are regulated by the Turks and Caicos Telecommunications Commission. Flow (Cable & Wireless) and Digicel are the main mobile network operators, offering GSM, 3G, and 4G LTE services. Islandcom Wireless provides limited 3G coverage.
Emergency telecommunications are managed under the Telecommunications Emergency Preparedness and Response Policy (TEPRP), led by the Telecommunications Commission in partnership with the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies. The TEPRP includes an Emergency Preparedness Agreement between Digicel and Flow to ensure network resilience and priority access for emergency services during hurricanes and other disasters.
The islands maintain regional coordination through the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), and in large-scale emergencies, support may be requested from the WFP-led Emergency Telecommunications Cluster (ETC).
