The UNWFP-led ETC in the Pacific is strengthening its presence with the appointment of its first dedicated Coordinator for Tonga. Patrick Natula, an Australia Assists standby partner with fifteen years of humanitarian experience, has joined the Department of Communications to support national efforts and deepen collaboration with the Pacific ETC.

This milestone builds on the momentum created during the 2022 underwater volcanic eruption and tsunami response, when the ETC worked alongside national authorities to restore connectivity and reinforce emergency communications systems across the islands. The lessons and partnerships forged during that operation laid the foundation for a more sustained and locally anchored approach.

Patrick’s role will focus on aligning national and regional priorities, planning weekly activities with the Pacific ETC and ensuring that preparedness and response efforts continue to evolve. His presence in country marks an important step toward strengthening resilience and supporting Tonga’s leadership in emergency telecommunications across the Pacific.
