Samoa Hosts Second Training in Pacific Emergency Telecoms Series

The Emergency Telecommunications Cluster (ETC), led by the World Food Programme (WFP) in the Pacific, has kicked off a vital week of training in Apia, Samoa. Building on momentum from the regional launch last week in Tonga, this initiative marks another key step in strengthening emergency communications capacity across the Pacific.
The ETC Pacific team is honoured to have the Acting CEO of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) Samoa, alongside the French Ambassador to Samoa, His Excellency Mr. Guillaume Lemoine, officially open the training session. Their presence underscores the importance of strong partnerships in supporting disaster preparedness efforts in the region.
Throughout the week, WFP and ETC are working closely with MCIT and the Disaster Management Office of Samoa to equip emergency responders with essential skills in radio and satellite communications. These technologies are lifelines in emergencies—particularly in a region prone to cyclones, tsunamis, and other climate-related disasters. The training aims to enhance national and regional readiness by ensuring that first responders can establish and maintain connectivity when traditional networks are down.
This initiative reflects a shared commitment to building resilience through collaboration, technical expertise, and local leadership. WFP Pacific expresses sincere gratitude to the Government of Samoa, the French Embassy in Samoa, and the broader United Nations team in Samoa for their strong and ongoing support.
Fa'afetai lava and merci beaucoup for your partnership.
