ETC Pacific releases checklist for cyclone season

As cyclone season approaches—typically running from November to April—the Pacific ETC is urging national stakeholders to take proactive steps to ensure telecoms resilience. The newly released Cyclone Season Preparedness Checklist offers a streamlined guide to help countries bolster their emergency communications capabilities before storms strike.

📋Key Actions for Readiness:

  • Planning & coordination - Convene your national ETC team, review the National Emergency Telecommunications Plan (NETP), and update contact lists for all key stakeholders.
  • Equipment & infrastructure - Inspect and test emergency communications gear—especially satellite and radio systems. Pre-position equipment in regional emergency operations centres and activate satellite subscriptions to ensure connectivity when it matters most.
  • Capacity refresher - Run national and regional radio check exercises, deliver refresher training to emergency responders (resources available on the Pacific Waves eLearning Portal), and simulate communications drills to test readiness.

This checklist, developed by the World Food Programme (WFP) under the Pacific ETC, is a practical tool to help governments and partners stay ahead of the curve. Cyclones may be unpredictable, but preparedness doesn’t have to be.
