Lifesaving Connections on the Frontlines in Ukraine

In an emergency, communication is everything. When humanitarians head into frontline areas of Ukraine, mobile phones aren’t always an option — networks can be down, jammed, or simply don’t reach. That’s where the WFP-led Emergency Telecommunications Cluster (ETC) comes in.

In May, we expanded our critical VHF radio coverage by activating two new remote sites in Barvinkove (southeastern Kharkiv) and Shostka (northeastern Sumy). Now, humanitarian responders in these high-risk zones can stay connected — and protected — through direct communication with UNDSS Security Operations in Kyiv.

This is more than just radios and towers — it’s about keeping our colleagues safe when every second counts. Our upgraded 17-site VHF network across Ukraine is a vital safety net, providing secure, reliable communications where it matters most.

No mobile signal? No problem. Our VHF radio network is a lifeline when all else fails. Together, we’re making sure that humanitarians can reach those in need, safely.
